You can run a full topology without issues on most laptops if you find the
right idlePC and idlemax values. I have written on my blog how to do this.
If you really want to go for Ubuntu I suggest you look at WUBI. You install
Ubuntu under Windows. You can find it at this URL
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer
