Kid,
you can think of the L3 inside the switch as just another host wich
happens to have the base MAC. So the switch always switches no matter
what, and the L3 engine just does L3 (and other stuff) for all the
frames it gets. So you were right.

(This "internal" host corresponds to the punt destination in CEF)
