If this is a virtual environment, just spin up a Debian 6.0 netinst or business card cd and just go with the defaults. Create a user during install and do your backups there. If you go with bare bones, you may need to install openssh Apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade ; apt-get install openssh Its always been faster than trying to coach an admin through getting something for SFTP/SCP in Windows.
