I have researched and tested this on a 2514 and a 2501. While you can
do dot1q on a 10mbit interface of a 2500, the Lance Ethernet I/O hardware
imposes a limit on the size of the packets. So the interface will no longer
support an MTU of 1500. If I am not mistaken, dot1q adds 3 bytes to the
packet, meaning it now only supports an MTU of 1497. I did find
documentation on the CCO site about this.
