I actually used Ethereal the other day to prove to someone in my office 
that when you use 'ping -a' in Windows, it's not magically pulling trhe 
hostname out of the remote IP stack via ICMP, but rather doing a PTR 
query against a name server.
Using Ethereal/ettercap/tcpdump on a daily basis, IMO, is close to the 
best thing you can do to further your understanding of IP.
